I am looking at getting a 250F to fool around on, just because they are so much fun. I probably will not race it...much.

I have found a nearly new (10 hrs or less) 06 YZ250F in original condition, shiny and new. The price is good, it may as well be a new bike.

I am aware that yamaha recalled and replaced the valves that year so I will be sure they have been done before the bike gets ridden if I get it

I am curious about the bike, mainly the motor...how do the 06 models run? I assume it is decent but not blazing fast (like most yz250F's I have ridden)

suspension, etc?? anyone?

The 06's are pretty much the same bike as the 09, which is nearly the same as the 11. Suspension is the SSS KYB stuff, which is awesome, motor is the same as 01 but pretty strong, especisally with a little carb work and an exhaust. I raced an 07 YZ250F in 2 rounds of SX in 2007 with only my suspension revalved, Power Now in my carb, FMF pipe and silencer, Twin Air Powerflow kit, Renthal handlebars and different chain and sprockets. They are very capable bikes.

You're pretty much right on. Solid reliability, but not going to blow your doors off in the power dept.

I've always read the YZF's are the most reliable 250's.

i scooped up an 06 that was in mint shape a couple yrs ago as a project/race bike. Its not the best handling bike, but 27mm clamps helped it a ton. Williams motowerx will take care of any power issues you have with it. Oh yeah when the motor was pulled valves were still perfect with close to 100 hrs.

Yea the yamaha has nt changed much , other than small things and plastic etc, but the 250f is solid, with a few mods the bike is a great bike at all levels, twist that right grip!

Alas, it is so . . . for some reason the link corrupts when it gets posted.

My brother has an 06 with a 290 kit in it and it is awesome. Great handling, great suspension. Before the 290 kit, it was a little slow.

Very reliable bikes. I think they put a punch mark next to the VIN if the valves were done.

I don't think that valve is supposed to go in stem down??? Mine(2001) looked a "hole" lot worse than that one FTE.

Cutting and pasting the link to the address bar works.

I had one, and it ran fine. I blew it up once because the drain bolt rattled out, unbeknown to me while I was riding. The other time I blew a head gasket, and that started all sorts of problems.

But when it was running, it was a pretty strong and stable bike. A lot more forgiving if you came up short than my '04. That thing would swap like wives on ABC.

Great bike, owned one for two seasons.
Did an overhaul on the top end for the second season which included a hi comp piston, pro x steel exhaust valves, pro x steel inlet valves, wiseco chain and the rest of little bits.

The power on my yzf was quite low to mid range. To compare it with my bro's 2006 kxf 250 they're completley different. I couldn't believe it. So i bought a kxf 250 this year Laughing

The yzf was a solid bike though.

I had one for about a month, and then sold it, the Honda, and the Kawi, are much better IMO.

I had one in 06-07.....rode it once, sometimes twice a week for 2 years solid. I put a 290 kit on mine and raced vet expert the whole time.....that bike got rode hard and put away wet all the time. I never did one thing to it other than maintenance. It started as good the day i sold it as it did new. Did'nt turn that great though....i struggled the whole time trying to make it handle good, but it did'nt do anything wrong though either. Just keep an eye on the valvles and the cam chain. Never had to adjust anything on it though. Great reliable bike for sure....that 290 kit made it awsome for me to race.....450's had nothing on me even on the starts....just have to leave her on a little longer......2 years of maintenace free riding and the guy i sold it to rode it for 30 minutes, (he said) and it blew up......go figure. He did change the oil before he rode it so i had no way of knowing if he screwed something up or not...He was not happy with me one bit. I was as surprised as he was .

I was gonna suggest this ..... a 290 lit in any 250f will be the funnest bike you've ever ridden save for a 125, 144, 150, 250, or 500cc 2 stroke. If you must go against the grain and get a 250f you should definitely look into the big bore, they aren't that expensive either. Look on eBay you should have no problem finding a brand new Athena 290 kit for 600 or less and that's complete with a bolt on cylinder, full top end, and gaskets. It was worth every penny and wouldn't consider riding a 250f without one.

well I got sick of having no 250F so I finally went and looked that this 06 YZ I had been thinking about. It has barely any wear on its ORIGINAL rear tire , so you can imagine how the rest looks- i dont believe it has ever been truly dirty before and has just a few hrs on it.

the bad news is the valve recall had never been done so I had to drop it off at the Yamaha dealer on the way home...worth $2400, though....easy

Congrats on the new bike man, who made you aware of the recall?, its funny because my buddy has a 09 crf450 that had a recall and he was 'nt aware of the recall. I told him about and his bike went to the dealer for the free repair!
