Not sure if this was already posted here, documentary (posted to YouTube last week) about the beginnings of Carlsbad Raceway including Marty Moates and his 1980 USGP win.

DeCoster(disgusted) in the pits, a Carlqvist testing story Laughing , getting the USGP to ABC, race fans vs the woodstock'ish party fans, hot weather, etc. What a time in US Motocross history!

So was Marty ever on this board? I know the general consensus was that Factory Feel was Marty but Bauer said it wasn't him.

On one day in the late '90s, I raced there. It was just a local Sunday race, nothing special, and I got my clock cleaned by a then-future pro named Chris Sprenkel. I'm really glad I decided to ride though, because I can say I was there. It's like hallowed moto ground now.

I raced this track quite a few times and l never did well there. I don't know why, probably because that place exposed some lack of cardio! Laughing

Went to a bunch of the GPs though and they were always awesome and hot! Seeing Moates win and then Magoo are two of my best moto memories.

Thanks for posting!

I wish ABC would let go of all the USGPs footage and let Todd Huffman do some magic with that footage

There was a post here within the last year where Todd mentioned that ABC wants way too much money for the rights. Seems kind of odd to me, because really, what else are they going to do with it?

Raced at Carlsbad from 1976 CMC to June 26th 2004, the last day ever, probably over 400 race days. My favorite track of all time.

My best memory is having the privilege of following Moates around the track that last day it was open- Marty was riding a YZ 450 with supermoto street tires mounted, and was still going faster than anyone else that day...

ABC ran the second moto of the 1986 USGP live and I remember thinking what a big deal that was. That was the last one they had there. You can find most if not all of the 1980s telecasts on youtube but nothing but super 8 footage of the 70s races .

I truly enjoyed this. Motocross has barely changed, apart from the bikes.

It made me start wondering, why would such an iconic track that held many GPs just wither away? There are tracks in europe that started before anyone in the US knew what motocross was, and they are still there.

Never been to Carlsbad but that place will forever be a part of me as when the USGP would be televised it was like Super Bowl Sunday for me as a kid. (Out of the norm as a kid from South Louisiana) Would watch the race then take off on my bicycle and motocross anything and everything. Now I only live a few miles away and would stop by the site if I knew where it was...

Agreed. I also raced there a few times on a KTM250mX. Not too may KTM's on the gate back then. I broke my big toe on the freeway (counter clockwise?) at one race. It's just an awesome memory to have raced there. I would race the track in my head for years after but I have never raced anything as brutal since.

Some good stories / interviews by Zapata Espinoza in this Carlsbad Memories piece in MXA. I remember him being at the Golden States I attended on amateur day. Hard name to forget!

Going to Carlsbad was special. The thought of being on the same track as Magoo, Glover, DeCoster, etc. was cool for about a half-lap Laughing , then it was "whoa, I need to figure this place out". Wet/muddy/slick in practice, hard pack in the afternoon. Glad I made the trek down.

Cool picture of Chuck Sun in that article.

Great thread! Carlsbad was awesome!

Thanks for providing that link, my buddy Zapata mentioned when I gave a beer to an exhausted Bengt Aberg as his bike broke down on the Carlsbad freeway and we called him and he rolled over to us. Smile

Our crew went every year and one year we brought 5 kegs of heineken. two the night before and 3 for the day of the race.

Bengt slugged down the mug of Heineken with snot puppies and everything like a champ!

The crowd went WILD!! Woohoo

Just found this ol sticker.

Raced there are about a dozen times it was a fantastic track and very demanding.
I'm on the Can Am 250 here on the start, luved that bike.

Bought it like you all should have when it came out. MM and LOP had it figured out. The inside story is even better. Hopefully that comes out.

I used to watch Carlsbad whenever I could, before I even rode. To me it was moto heaven. I started to ride, moved to Ca and got to race there at some CMC events in the vet/or classes ... I sucked. Then I did a class and a couple privates there with Marty Smith. He taught me a bunch of tricks like riding up on the wall on the uphills. I won my next race there and loved it from that point on. Went back whenever I could.
