So if anyone saw the post about my first ride of the season and how it ended in a broken tibeal plateau and fibula, I ended up back at the hospital for pain control today. They were finally able to bring my pain down to an acceptable level after suffering at home for five days in agony. They changed my medication regiment for home as well, and hopefully this works out for the best.

While I was there, I was finally able to see my X-rays and such, and from the CT Scans they do, they make a 3D model of the injury. It's some pretty fascinating stuff to say the least. The first question I had was "Exactly how many fractures are there?" The reply was "numerous and they're all commutated." So basically there's a bunch, and they're all close together

I also learned that my time spent in this external fixator doesn't count towards my recovery time. My recovery time starts when they do the internal fixation and really start correcting things.

Once we get that far which will be in a "few weeks," depending on how it recovers, the light at the end will be glowing more brightly hopefully.

I've attached some photos of the external fixator, the leg and the X-rays and models.

Please be safe this season boys and girls. I wasn't sending anything massive when I did this. It was a stupid tiny table top I've jumped countless times before. It just bit me.

Enjoy the season!!!! I'll enjoy the support of family, friends and the like. I'd be in a much darker place than I am without them. So thanks to those people. And some of them are even here on vital.

Shane

Get better dude. That looks like it sucks. Prayers sent from Ohio!!

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. It seems I don't have much luck for broken bones just "breaking." In 2000 I shattered my talus and broke my fib at an areacross. I managed that without ever crashing and it resulted in eight screws and a plate holding it together. Now in the same leg, it's all kinds of massive damage.

The good news is that I can honestly say that I haven't thought of selling my bikes. I also haven't questioned my desire to get back on them. The first thing it seems like people have asked is "are the bikes for sale?" Or "you're not going to ride again, are you?" I guess I have a passion for what I do. And I also refuse to let an injury define me. I tend to ride conservatively as I've gotten older. This was just a perfect storm of events that came together with a horrific outcome. I can't wait to ride again. I was actually talking to Digger tonight about as I heal a bit, wanting to go watch the races and hang out. Maybe help out as best I can. I can't step away. Nor do I want to.

And the show of support has still been nothing short of incredible. I'm sure there will be some dark days filled with frustration. But all in all, I know I have the support system to push me back where I want to be. I have no doubt I will return to my career as a firefighter. And I have no doubt I will return to the track. Thanks for being part of that system and sharing your stories of coming back from injuries and the overall positive vibes. They mean more than most people know.

Thanks man. It's oxycodone, not OxyContin. But my plan is to get off of it. Just a matter of waiting for them to do the actual surgery so the healing can really begin.

I'm not a pain med guy to begin with. But my options this time were limited.

Shane, I'm sure you know you have a long road ahead of you. Having gone through a 2010 tibial plateau fracture myself it was for me at 48 a passion ending injury. I now trail ride only occasionally due to a lack of range of motion in my right knee. So my advice is as soon as you can after your repair surgery and with your docs blessing start bending that knee, PT will be the key. It took 3 extra arthroscopic surgeries to get my knee to bend about 115deg. Scar tissue formation is different for everyone but once it takes hold it can be very difficult to get that rom back. Everyday life is workable today but my ortho guy recommends not to ride with my limited rom of motion because in a crash something has to bend and if the knee can't the femur will and that would suck. As mark293 recommends get off that oxy asap for me it was 3-4 days of the withdrawl skin crawl. Good luck buddy!! and get well soon.

Geezuz...some really scary pics. Keep it clean and keep off it. Another thing is eating well and not boozing or taking anything whilst on the antibiotics.

Good luck Shane..time to put in the laps on MX vs ATV SX..

Thanks man. I need to start playing mxgp again. Right now I'm wishing they had the MX vs atv titles for the PS4. A little change of flavor is good every once in a while.

Since the injury happened, I've followed the docs orders to the letter. And I rarely drink as it is, so I haven't had a drop since the crash anyway. There's still a long road to recovery. But it's my only option, so I'm walking it rather than sitting in bed feeling sorry for myself. I'm well aware the darkest days for recovery are yet to come. That'll come with the frustration of PT and such when the real recovery begins.

I have lots of time to keep my fingers on the pulse of vital here and to post more often than most. But I do find a good network of support between my friends, family and people here. I've said before I'd be in a much darker place if it weren't for them. And that's something I completely believe. I will continue to post update threads of my recovery and any "news" that I get in my condition.

My three biggest goals currently are:

1 - Maintain my happiness (for myself, but also those around me).
2 - To return to my career as a firefighter/paramedic
3 - To return to riding once again.

The worst bone to break in the body, Tibial Plateau Fracture. Been there, but when mine disentigrated the tibia shifted and tore my peroneal nerve causing me to have foot drop. Been a long road, dont have no where near the ROM as before, knee pops, no stability. Pretty much my right leg is just there at about 50% function from before injury, just happy to still have two legs after 3 surgeries in 2 years to get to 50%.

That's some gnarly photos man. Hopefully you continue to improve and to work towards your return to before the injury!

Is all they're working off of currently is the X-rays and CT scans. I follow up Wednesday to see what happens next. Hoping for good news. I'd be happy to be mobile again and even go look at my bike.

Been in that exact same spot.... External Fixator while the swelling subsides for surgery. Mine was same location, but right knee, had breaks to both the tib/fib & 13 breaks right at the plateau. 1 year is about right, but even after a year I still had some issues. Had edema (swelling) in my leg for about 2 years & was pretty hooked on the pain meds. By the end of 2 years, that leg was better than my other with all the rehab. Go after the rehab super aggressive especially on the range of motion, The clock is ticking till a time when you won't be able to break loose any more scar tissue. After that, you will not get any more range of motion.

Damn that is a gnarly break. Praying for a full recovery and to get back on the bike as soon as humanly possible. If you can get some decent medical marijuana it will help with the pain meds(won't need as much) and it's a great anti-inflammatory. Seems like you need some of that. Let me know if ya want to try. I have helped others with injuries like yours.

Not trying to be a dick here.

But I would only be near that bedside commode when you need to be. Wouldn't be resting my compromised integument leg on that commode....

Otherwise. Holy shit you did a good number. Heal up and stay uninfected!!!!

I've only been on the commode as needed. I don't really do much of anything unless I have to. It makes for long days to say the least. The hospital is who said it's the best thing for me. All of my surgical/pin sites are very clean and healthy. It's my plan to keep them that way.

I can't wait to heal up! Thanks for the well wishes.

Injury was a few years ago. X-rays and a few CT scans, but mostly x-rays every visit. I didnt PT as hard as I should, I cant get my right heel even close to my ass. With the foot drop injury I received getting back full ROM wasn't extremely important at the time considering my right foot would just hang there. Then I had a bi-lateral tendon transfer. Bascially a tendon on the inside of my foot was cut, re-routed through my ankle and anchored into the bone on top of my foot. So now a tighlty stretchted tendon holds up my foot. My right foot moves up and down 2-3 inches by me flexing my calf muscle which contracts the tendon anchored to my foot to lift it slightly. I am literally a re-built and re-wired human being, lol.
