"On Monday, he returned from Marie Curie Hospital (Lodelinsart) where he had been admitted to treat a coronavirus infection," Josiane Marit, his partner for 33 years, told us.

“Unfortunately his health quickly deteriorated to the point that he was admitted to the emergency room at Saint-Joseph (Gilly) Hospital on Wednesday morning. There, Joël suffered a cardiac arrest for several minutes. According to the doctor I had on the phone, his vital functions are damaged. "

The former world champion (77 years old) has had major health problems for several years. Diabetic, victim of five strokes, Joël Robert has been experiencing heart and lung problems for several months.

“It’s horrible to see the state in which a champion of his caliber finds himself today,” said his partner. "He who has lived at 100 miles an hour all his life now depends on a machine. "

Joël Robert has won six world motocross titles and notched 50 Grand Prix victories. It took about 30 years for his records to be broken by Stefan Everts. He is also the creator of the 12 Hours of Chinelle, an enduro whose unique concept in the world has attracted tens of thousands of spectators each year for more than forty years.

Very Sad to see a once Great Athlete being taken by this virus ! He was one of my favorite European Mx riders in the 70’s ...
Great Memories!

Joel Robert is my first moto hero... reading about him when i was 9 in my brother magazines.

He was the greatest of all time, at that time. Roger Decoster was on the rise and of course a team mate on the dominate Belgium MXDN and Trophee Des Nations teams.

As great as Roger became, I think i've always revered Joel more... the storys of his speed and strength...

pure badass.

Same here. Virtually the same story...

The Mag's were from down the street at the Webb's house.

I hope for the best.

God Bless Joel, he must have been a real hard dude, there are stories about him hard drinking & smoking not training & still blitzing the worlds best opposition, Pure Talent alone,

I never got to see him race but have seen him at a few events over the years, he always supported the Belgian team at the MX Des Nations in years gone by, hope he recovers, one of Moto`s greats

Took my mother in law last month and my uncle last week. Thankfully my dad survived but it put him in the hospital and he is still recovering. My mom scheduled to get a vaccination next week and my wife gets her second round Tuesday. Hope Joel survives, one of my earliest moto hero's.

Sad news.

Was it Joel that the fans were trying to “help” by lying on the track in front of his rivals on the original “On Any Sunday” movie?

Legend.

I like how you wrote "greatest of all time at that time". He was my first moto hero too, and a force of nature back then
