1977. Yamaha had the YZ80C in 1976 and I could beat everything then the next year the RM80 came out and it was as good/ better than my YZ.

1977, final answer.

I was lucky enough to get to race a prototype in Australia in 1976. I was only 12 years old but apparently the engine was sand cast in most parts. There were also one being raced in the US by Steve Schmitz.
It handled great but power was light on compared to the modified and sorted YZ80C’s from memory.

These bikes sounded bad ass. Talk about a shorty silencer. Damn near a straight stinger pipe. Easy to work on and who wouldn't want to ride a 78 RM 80.

I'd get on one right this second and want to go for a rip and have a blast!
I was wondering when someone was going to reference this. That was one loud-ass bike! A friend of mine had a 78' RM80, and I had a 77' YZ100. Our neighbors freaking hated us.

A mixture of RM’s and YZ80’s on the line in Australia in 1978. A grade at Barabool, Victoria.

RacerX just did an article about Suzuki's amateur program. The issue with Blake Bagget on the cover. I wanna say April issue. It talks about the introduction of the RM80.

77 first year rm80. My 74 yz80 was so slow. 77 rm80”s frames broke real easy,Suzuki gave me a 78 frame free, even as the second owner.

1977 RM80B (there was no A model). Graduated to that bike from a GT80. Was definitely an on/off rocket that required significant suspension work. Was competitive against the YZ80D, but the monoshock E wS released in '78 and made life a bit more difficult for me and my RM. But that bike made me a Suzuki fan throughout my adolescent years. And I'm still bitter about "Let Broc Bye".

I had a new 1978 RM 80. I shouldn't have sold that bike.

1977- I had, still in the family. Light switch powerband, still claims unsuspecting victims 😂

My 77B is my pride and joy. I got it as a barn find. Still has original tires, grips, chain, piston, plastics, seat cover etc..
Only thing missing is the original front number plate.

The '77 RM80's were so loud. My friend had one and he would ride it in the woods surrounding the baseball fields. Needless to say, you could hear him coming for miles. Standing next to the thing while it was running was next to impossible. haha I remember his frame broke under the tank towards the rear of the backbone. He got her welded up and continued to ride and wreak havoc for a few more years until he moved up to big bikes. On another note, The loudest bike I ever heard (besides the '77 RM 80) was my buddy's '81 RM60. Ear deafening to be around while riding. hahahaha

I loved my 77 RM80. It was a rocket. Especially after having it bored out a few times. And, yes the frame was easy to break. Broke mine twice. The second time it was only held together by the gas tank. Good times.
