I received the new water pump impeller yesterday and took a picture of it (along with the old recalled impeller that Rocky Mountain by mistake also sent me).

The plastic fins look identical. The steel(?) shaft is lighter and shiny on the new one.

Does anyone know what the difference is? Is the new one more hardened steel? More heat treated, therefore does not break?
The issue was that the impeller shaft snapped - right?

Old (recalled) one:

New one:

It is hard to tell in a picture , but there looks like a little edge on the shiny one that would lead me to believe it has been hard chromed surface coated.

It never was steel, it was resin. Looks like they just coated the resin with chrome for better wear resistance.

Why wouldn't you? Correct me if Im wrong but wouldn't a chrome finish aid in durability and help against wear resistance? I would hope Yamaha put some sort of R and D into this new design.

Certainly they put loads of R&D into the new design. Then some bean counter figured he'd save 14 cents on each bike and spec'd a lesser shaft (causing customers to get the "shaft").

Was wear resistance the issue? I thought the shaft was breaking, but could certainly be incorrect about that.

Because I don't like buying a new bike and having to spend money on it before I even ride it Wink

To those that have installed the replacement shift stop part: does it require the removal of the clutch basket? I just bought the 2014 and have the new part in hand, just haven't had the time to tear into it yet, just curious.

I'd like to replace my shift assy part and I've heard and read two different opinions on how to access and replace it. Can someone that has replaced there's give me a step by step on how to do it? Thanks

Your manual is your best friend. Here is the quick and dirty.
1) drain oil and coolant
2)remove left crankcase cover
3)locate shift stopper lever in bottom left and remove it (one bolt)
4)replace with new stopper (the spring will be a pain to get back in place, just zip tie it to the stopper then remove the zip tie when its bolted up)
5)replace cover
6)replace fluids
Done

I asked Yamaha for the replacement 1SM-12450-09 and they only have 1SM-12450-01 listed as the updated part.
Problem is the replacement impeller shaft is different and doesn't fit! Yamaha here don't have any knowledge of the -09 replacement part number. Unfortunately Yamaha race support here South Africa is is terrible. Can anybody shed some light on this, maybye somebody from a Yamaha Race team?

Sounds like your Yamaha distributor in South Africa is being lazy and hasn't updated his parts fiche. Just about every OEM parts listing in the US has the updated part listed. Take it back and demand the updated part.

Actually, I just looked at a few websites that carry OEM parts and they are now listing that part number as the updated part:

MPN: 1SM-12450-09-00
Description: Impeller Shaft Assembly
Replaced by new # 1SM-12450-01-00

But the look on the impeller that you got looks to be like a 450 water pump. The 450 water pump has that straight edge on the tip of it. Was the package opened when you got it?

It may be more money but what I did for my 2014 was get a splitstream water pump from motostuff.com, I also replaced the shift stopper lever at the same time as I had the cover off anyway. BTW the yamaha owners/ service manual that comes with the bike is great, it is step by step instructions to rebuild the entire bike with torque specs for every nut and bolt.

That info helped a lot, didnt think it may be a 450 part. the package was sealed. Im off to Yamaha now to try resolve it they must order the another with the same part number and we will see if they same arrives, may be a factory packaging problem.
Cheers

Yeah, it definitely looks like the 14' YZ450 water pump. The part number for the 450 pump is only one letter and number off of the 250F water pump -

450: 1SL-12450-00-00
250: 1SM-12450-01-00

So if the package was sealed.... I would say its a mis-package by Yamaha.
Hope everything works out.

All I did was order the 2015 250f pump....not sure if that helps.
Because even though you order the 15 pump, some parts grabber could see that the old one cross references and send you that by mistake as well.
I wish you good luck with this. I feel a bit guilty, as mine was so easy to get.

Hi guys
Problem resolved the part was incorrectly labeled and was indeed a 450 impeller. reordered same part number and the correct impeller arrived.
Something to be wary of, check the parts carefully, don't simply trust part numbers.
Thanks for all the assistance.

You will have that thing running in no time and be able to ride with no worries, good job on addressing the issues before they become a major problem.

.

Changed ours out, no problems prior or after.

You can change the stopper out with-out removing the Clutch Basket. Take your time and with some mechanical know-how you can do the swap at home.

Cheers!

my 2014 yz250f seized on me it had about 60 hours on it and it ended up being the shift fork stopper well the are covering everything free of charge well the replaced the part and split the cases and said he tore everything apart and put a new piston in the engine and put it back together and cranked it over and it was still seized so now there taring it all apart again and putting a new rod in it to see if that is the problem im getting frusturated and how long its taking but least its free of charge here is a picture of what i found in the case cover ill up load in my next post
