long time since posting. does anyone ride since having a hip replacement?
I just had a good one a few days ago and broke the femoral head off in the hip joint and they were discussing trying to fix it or just do a hip replacement. I just woke up from the surgery and I am not sure which direction they went
Not the same but i had hip resurfacing done in 2015 and still ride mx and mtb.Give it time to heal and do your physical therapy. Took me about 6 months to get back on the bike
thanks man. i had to look up what a resurfacing was. still seems like a pretty good surgery to get.
thanks for the info !
It was pretty bad. They went in through the back. Got about a 5" scar on my ass. It was a different situation than yours. I had bone on bone from wear and tear. I did get the same deal though, they said wern't sure if it would be resurfacing or full replacement till they got inside. I got lucky with resurfacing as I still have my original bones they just shave the ball and socket down and put a metal implant in. If I ever need a revision it will be easier. Hopefully I dont !
Here it is

I’ve had both of my hips replaced. If that’s what you have then your jumping days are over and dabbing your leg is really dangerous. Now, can you ride? Absolutely. It’s up to you how much risk you take.
The problem is replaced hips have great mobility everywhere except straight out to the side. Also, your doctor will advise not even to jump out of the back of the truck so that takes out the possibility of bailing off a bike mid air.
In a way it sucks, and in a way it’s great not being in a wheel chair! Just have to wrap your mind around there are now some limits to what you can do.
Exactly why my doc recommended resurfacing. He knew how active I am and said maybe in 20-25 years if it wears out a full replacement would be an easy revision. I beat the hell out of this thing since 2015 and still feels the same
Hey, thanks a lot for the insight. that is sort of what I have been thinking. It may be time to call it a day and start spectating. I am still waiting to hear if they did a replacement or just did a fix on the femoral head.
my surgeon residence dr just explained they did a ‘fix’ and not a replacement. With a plate and 2 screws. He didn’t display the most confidence in that this will be good. But he mentioned a replacement could always been done in the future.
Wish you luck with it. Hopefully it heals up And your ok
sounds like he said the same thing to do. said i’m young enough to try to save the hip first
Yeah got to find a specialist for resurfacing. He knew I was not done riding and said a traditional hip replacement is much easier to fail or dislocate. I have a levo turbo ebike I shred with the guy’s weekly and have had some nasty crashes and the hip is still Rick solid. Back to riding both bikes and it feels great. Now if we could just turn the heat down. Getting my hip replaced in fall. It can only be better. I havent heard a single person say anything other than "get it done now". Basically handicapped at the moment
Had my right hip replaced 7 years ago.
Thought I had to givin up riding, but after 18 months, I gave it a go. Went to about six events, but realized at this point I was really no longer competing, just sit at the line letting them go and try to catch a few folks. Half of them just pull over so it really wasn’t much fun.
After my last race, for two months, I seriously felt like I could feel the rod going down my femur.
I do know many folks that do ride with replacements.
Had my left knee replaced a year ago, the best I can do with Moto is watch these days!
Having it replaced was absolutely a great decision, feels like factory in daily life.
Best of luck to you
Which doctor did your resurfacing? Private message me if you don’t want to say his name. I’ve met with a couple well known ones in different states earlier this year. I would like to get it done next year. I’m 28 so they tell me to keep holding off.
I had the exact same injury in 2003 and got three big screws. I raced 10 seasons that way, but got avascular necrosis (lack of blood flow and dead bone) and eventually 50% of the femoral ball was gone. After that I had to quit riding as I was pretty much crippled and in constant pain until I got a hip replacement (old style) in 2013 and got a new lease on life. One path is to get the screws etc. and then wait on the full hip. I continued to ride and race on the artificial hip with no problems, but I also haven't had any big crashes (I'm 55 years old and don't send it that much). There is the risk of damaging the implant if you have a big one.
What will probably happen is you'll need the replacement eventually. But they do wear out so you might want to wait as long as you can. The surgery is really not a big deal and they had me up and out of bed when I woke up.
I broke my femoral head into pieces in 2004 when I was 28. Took the 6 months off as the doctor recommended but the day he released me to ride I called my brother and went that afternoon. I'll admit riding for the 1st time was a bit rattling especially when you have that 1st crash again. But after a crash or 2 you realize that you're ok and it eventually doesn't bother you. Now, fast forward to Jan 2017 I finally had enough of the deterioration and had a full replacement done. I was back on the bike in 4 weeks post op, and did the Oreana 100 desert race at 7 weeks post op. Granted I didn't ride full speed at all but my wife wanted to do the race so i signed up for a class that went right before her wave so I could ride with her. Did all 90+ miles that year and felt fine. It comes back to a point where you're gonna know everyday that your hip isn't the same but honestly on the bike you won't feel any different. Get well soon wishes and keep on rehabbing!
Yeah man I was in so much pain and essentially ready for a wheel chair. I feel so damn blessed to have these factory hips. I still chase my son around on a TTR 110… he’s on a 50. Otherwise, I’d be completely handicap and probably addicted to pain killers. I’ll take what I can get! Yeah, I’ll never be able to do some things but I can still drive a golf ball 300 yards and have a good time.
I ended up getting the 2nd one done about 6 months after the first. Edit: I had old injuries and developed the acasculsr necrosis like others mentioned. It was completely debilitating. I’m 39 fyi. Like I said, I’m thankful.

Had total hip replacement 2 years ago, now I ride nearly every weekend. 95% MX, 5% single track. Surgeon said no long distance running, no water skiing, no more bull riding, and snow skiing but MX was no issue. Said if I crashed badly, its likely the hip replacement would be the last of my main concerns.
I had a total hip replacement about 6 years ago when I was 45. Was back on a bike and the mx track as soon as the doc cleared me. Never had any issues and tested it with some pretty hard crashes. After the first crash, I felt relieved my hip was fine! My cousin just had double hip replacements and rides mx. None of our hip replacements were due to mx injuries.
Bet it was your right hip, correct?
hey guys. thanks for all the responses and insight on varying ways of having it fixed. i know i won’t be riding anytime soon, but was curious about other’s experience as they healed up. for now, I cannot believe the pain post surgery right now. i’m only 24 hours out.
I had a resurfacing on my rt side installed with too steep of a cup angle and had to be revised to a full replacement.at 5 years. Then the left side got a full thr a few years later. So I've had 3. I crashed hard enough to break my femur and "Open book" fracture my pelvis and both hip replacements held tough. Since that I've been averaging 100 miles a month on my emtb doing lots of steep climbs and few minor getoffs with no issues. Haven't been back on a moto track yet but desert/trail riding and dual sporting haven't been an issue either. Do your pt and give it time to fully heal then go do whatever you want. Obviously there's a risk of knocking the implants loose or snapping the bone around the parts if you fell wrong, but from my experience one they're in and fully healed (1 year ish) there pretty damn tough. You got the best outcome I believe, keep the original joint as long as possible. Resurfacing would be my 2nd choice BUT ONLY with a super experienced surgeon, the angles are critical because they're metal on metal, then you still have enough bone left to do a full thr if you have to down the road. Good luck and hang in there ! It gets much better after the first couple days. I knocked the shit of mine and they didn't come loose. You'll be back like the 6 million dollar man, better, stronger, faster... Stay positive once you're healed you'll be back !![BILL X RAYS PELVIS.jpg?VersionId=M9UrE BJeFG.HGmpF5h6riuywf3cz0](https://p.vitalmx.com/styles/s1200/s3/photos/inline/basic/BILL%20X%20RAYS%20PELVIS.jpg?VersionId=M9UrE_BJeFG.HGmpF5h6riuywf3cz0.M&itok=KeOCIrH1)
Here's a resurfacing and total hip side by side.
Yup, right hip. You must be a psychic.😂
5yrs ago when I got back into riding, I borrowed a poorly running carb'd yz450 for a summer. That bike accelerated my right hip deterioration by a few years me thinks. That said, hip arthritis is supposed to be highly genetic and my Dad has had both hips done starting when he was roughly my age. It was most likely going to happen.
Man that is gnarly, bummer to hear that. I broke my hip last year but not as severely as you, I ended up with 4 big ass screws on the right side of my hip. Almost a year later I can barely notice it when I ride. Hope the recovery goes well brother
Welcome to the club, I did this when I was 36, I'm now 54 and still riding and have absolutely Zero issues with it, don't even know it's there
Lol, I only said that because EVERY motocross rider I know that has hip replacement its always been the right hip or both (both only on people over 60). I have never met any fellow motocross or dirt bike rider under the age of 60 that had their left hip only replaced. I swear I think it has to do with kick starting dirt bikes for decades.......
I had my left hip replaced November 2021.
I was 56 years old.
Was it due to a specific injury or just arthritis, and you're right hip is still good? If so, you're the first person who I know that rides dirt bikes under 60 that I know that has had their left hip only done. My left hip looked like a 30 year old's hip and my right looked like an 80 year old's hip. No specific injuries to the hip for me. Got my hip rebuild done at 50.
