Create a template from scratch yourself (I've done a number of them) and you'll quickly realize why the people who make them want to get paid for it. They take a ton of time and materials (test prints, fitting modifications, etc) to do right.

If you think that the shops who give them away won't be hurt by their actions, then ask yourself why they're not out there for free and easy to find. Once a person who has no experience has designed their graphics, the next thing they do is to go around every sign shop in their town and find the lowest price to get them printed. They don't care who gave them the template. They're on a budget.

They have no idea that they require a special vinyl that has an adhesive that sticks to the low surface energy plastics and is solvent resistant. They wind up with a crappy laminate that won't hold up even as long as the wrong adhesive they've chosen. Their colors are weak and don't come anywhere close to matching the bike plastic, etc. Once they have their file on a memory stick it's all about who's cheapest and most sign shops have no idea about the special requirements to do MX graphics properly. They will be cheaper for sure because the materials they use will be the wrong ones. The right ones aren't cheap and they get billed out accordingly. These same small shops won't be willing to bring in the right materials because between the vinyl and the laminate you're looking at well over $1800 for full rolls of each (54" 12 mil laminate and 6 mil vinyl).

Also factor in that most shops that do understand this, will probably hit you up for an artwork charge that will be equal to the cost of the template or possibly much more. They'll need to impose all your individual pieces onto a single sheet, or you'll pay through the nose for all the wastage when you print them individually.

But hey, go out and make your own mistakes. See what you wind up with. It's not rocket science, but there's more to it than you realize.
The man knows of what he speaks.

Since we are on the subject, here are some graphics I designed a few years back for a good friend of mine... a mutual friend owns a few GNCs and always hooks us up, so he footed the bill and everyone ran graphics to advertise his stores.

Here is the Illustrator artwork...

And here is the finished bike... the actual decals were produced by Bryar at 180... he does some high quality work. My only complaint with 99% of graphics companies is that they do not sub-surface print... instead they print on a normal piece of like 3mil vinyl and then they laminate on a 15mil sheet. That just creates the opportunity for it to delaminate. Companies like ONE print reverse straight onto the backside of the thick 15mil-ish vinyl and then just apply a 3M adhesive.
These were done back in 2005 and Bryar and 180 were still relatively new to the graphics business.

I could've made it much more wild obviously, but Jon wanted his GNC LiveWell stuff to stand out and be readable as he rode past the bleachers at our local track.

And the reason for all of the BS words below the artwork is because I pulled the image from an old portfolio that I had.

Exactly.....your portfolio that you worked on so you made sure to notate that it was your property.
Ask Bryar if he would just give away a template to someone on a message board that he didn't know and see what his answer is.......I'm guessing it would be "fuck no".......lol.

Bike looks nice by the way.....clean lines.

Ya I agree that Bryar would not give away a template, because a lot of time/effort/and-or money goes into getting them...

I just got the impression that the kid was asking one of us civilians if we had something, not necessarily asking one of the graphics companies on here. Maybe I read his original post the wrong way though, but I initially took it as an innocent request to see if any of us happened to have a shroud outline that he could color in. I guess I also assumed it was a kid! haha

Thanks for the compliment Kongols... that's the only set I designed that ever actually made it to fruition I believe. I'll look to see if I still have the files from a cool Yamaha design I did for a buddy around the same time frame.

And I'm sure I'm partial to my own work, but aside from that fact, I do like how this bike came out... just the right mix of red and white, with enough white to set it aside from normal stock looking hondas.

I was making my own graphics and number plate backrounds back in 1978. Anyone with an once of artistic ability and a couple of hours can make graphic templates in their bedroom. Just like any other part in our sport....either buy it or fabricate it yourself.......or if you're 12 yrs old or younger its accceptable to ask a faster sponsored rider to give it to you for free.

This is a subject that can and will go back and forth forever. But fact is the OP never once in the original post asked for a company to give up their own hardwork for free. He simply asked for a free download. Much like going and downloading a app, you have those apps that you need to pay for as someone is looking for a return on their hard work, or free apps in which yes, they are most likely seeing a return with advertising and such, but the ability to download and use the app is cost free for the user. Personally as a college student, i would, and have tried to find the exact same thing with no real luck. Success or not, That is called using your resources.

So you have no problem with people downloading your photos and making posters out of them, posting them online and in general stealing your intellectual property?

Using your resources would be the OP doing the template himself.....that would be cost free and provide invaluable experience.....as Steve from Source pointed out that is an entry level job in that profession.
Once you get out of college and into the real world and see how many people want to rip off your work for free instead of paying you may have a different opinion on this.

Take a look on Facebook sometime....see how many pics are on their with huge watermarks across them stating that they are not a free image.
Every one of those pictures represents a photographer who isn't being paid for their work.

Completely different comparison to what im saying. Yes, i would take all action possible if photos were made into posters and sold. And even i myself am previously guilty of being that kid who runs someone else's photo the snapped of you on my facebook. Currently i let most everyone use my photos freely as i am a hobbiest. The example i was trying to put forth is more like this...

http://www.dafont.com/ - here you can find endless amounts of FREE fonts that people spent their time creating, free to use.
http://www.veer.com/products/fonts/?s_kwcid=veer&gclid=CO78hNfujK0CFWg0…- now here is a website in which you pay for the fonts.

Website 2 is more aimed at the professional in my opinion as they come much more complete and complex where dafont is more aimed to imho to the casual user who does graphic work for fun, school, or even light customer graphic work.

Actually it is the same thing......it's intellectual property.
How can you say on the one hand that you would go after someone that stole your work but it is OK to send someone a link to a site wher they can do the same thing?

That free font site makes money off advertising and they choose to post the fonts for "free"......in reality someone did have to be paid to make them but the people that put up that free site are making their money elsewhere so no charge for the fonts.
It has the general consumer in mind and that is not at all surprising.

The professional site is a pay site for a reason.....same as with the template sites.
It is something that is supposed to be used to make products that will be sold and as such you have to purchase them.

I freely send them the photos (always people i personally know) because i purely enjoy it, and one day will most likely charge, but until then, as long as my photo is not being sold as a poster that the individual is selling for profit, i have no problems with it.
But yes, dafont does make money off of advertising, however they are still free and him coming here asking for a place he can get "free templates" is no different then another coming on here asking if anyone knows of a website they can get "free" fonts. Just because no such thing exists doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to ask.

I never said he didn't have the right to ask......
Matter of fact I was the one that posted the site where he can get the templates for 25-35 bucks because you really can't find them much anywhere else.

When people start posting saying there is nothing wrong with just sending him the template that is when I disagreed.
When someone buys those templates they have to agree not to distribute them.

Im going to school for graphic design and I have all the programs like illustrator and photoshop and ive always wondered how to design the graphics for bikes. Do you just draw out everything yourself and then put it on the templates or do you find certain things to put on like paint splatters or something. I bought some graphics from Black Heart mx and I was wondering how he does stuff like that. I attached the picture of my bike below

There's no D is college moron. And it's not a typo, you did it in your next post. I guess the time you use to make such witty, scathing replies would be better spent going and getting your GED?

So the abrasive, insulting reply idea doesn't work for you? Oh but wait, it does, so long as it's from a "lifelong mechanic". Got it. Well since you care so much, I didn't go to college, I'm a mechanic, and when I'm going to be an asshole online, I will at least use proper spelling, and occasionally proper grammar.

Don't care about the abrasive reply but it does seem kind of petty that your reason for posting in this thread was to add that little spelling jab....seemed kinda lame.

I do happen to like hanging out with Pete, he is a good guy and a great mechanic.
What's funny is that you probably know the guy......especially since you race at Capeway a lot.

Didn't really take much to look you up man, I recognized the number and name since there aren't many Gabriels racing in NE.
You see I am the guy that does the announcing for Winchester and some of the NEMX/NCSC races so I see everyones names and numbers and quite a few stick in my head.
My name is Donn Collings by the way.

Always happy to hang out and bench race unfortunately the Cape is a little ways from me in CT but if you're pouring the drinks.....lol.
