I think people are going to love these new e-mx bikes. Yes we will miss the lack of exhaust sound but in just about every other way they are better.
Imagine being able to ride close to neighborhoods with bikes that require almost no maintenance and pull harder from the bottom than any equivalent combustion bike.
Yamaha is supporting some brave engineers' projects in Europe, but I don't know how much they are 'working on' it, besides maybe providing the bike(s).
I am so ready for a competitive electric to be something I can buy, I would much rather buy one than a 450.
My guess is that KTM, Yamaha or Honda will be the first with an e-bike (bike aimed for racing, not a trail bike like KTM has had for years) from the big manufacturers.
How I see it, it is a typical californian need, probably 20% of the global mx market, that will drive like for the 4 stroke the change for everybody including many people who absolutely don't need or want an e-bike for many reasons (sound for safety & other rider awereness, more powerful bikes are not necessary as the human body can't cop already with what we are having, not really a motorsport anymore, kills thousands of mechanics & industry jobs, not more ecological as it takes a lot of co2 to produce plus it takes a lot of rare earth elements including some that are extracted by kids in congo, plus electricity from solar is somewhat ok but 50% of electricity is still coal gas or nuclear ; or will 12k-15k bike upfront increase the accessibility. Personally, except in cali, I think the lack of tracks is not due to the noise but the lack of organization from the federations, OEM, local shops and riders - where each group are "users" but only a very few are willing to spend any time or money to defend or maintain the tracks, which are expected to be groomed and watered like chocolate whereas there is no need for training on real mx tracks.)
So that is gonna be for the best or for the worst, I don't know, but I think we should be carefull what we wish for. For Exemple, e-F1 are not as fun to watch as real F1 too, so even in term of "show" I am not sure if it is heading into the right direction.
Folks that act like no noise means I can ride in my yard in the burbs are hilarious
Maybe not in the burbs, but I'm leaving the burbs for 5 acres in 2 months and I certainly can't ride my 500 4 stroke on my 5 acres but a silent e-bike....well that changes the game, now I CAN have a track after all.
Sorry to try to shoot down your negativity, I realize that e-bikes are from some reason a huge threat to some of you guys.

I would have guess 5 acres would be big enough for a track of your own, even with. 4 stroke

Exactly. It is a project by 2 very small companies, supported by yamaha Europe (hq is in the netherlands) and the duch motor association. Nice initiative but i would be surprised if yamaha did more then supply some frames at this point.

Not with the noise of a big 4 stroke...…..
5 acres is pretty small. It's big enough to perhaps dodge some dust issues, especially if you have a good sprinkler system, but it would be tough to find enough space to stand on the boundary of your neighbor and have to take decibel readings.
A 5 acre plot means that you are only about 78 yards from a neighbor, even if your plot is square. Closer than that if it is irregular.

Or LHRB? I don’t see a shifter
Pit Row
Any news on the Honda btw? Honda had their prototype ready over a year ago.
It was pretty responsive
