That's ridiculous for a tire you'll get 50% less life out of lol

If you realized how cheap motocross is compared to road racing you’d know that isn’t even a consideration for a great many of folks out there who want to be competitive.

As someone who road raced this is painfully true. 600 dollars on a set of slicks a weekend, and sometimes two sets a weekend if you're real fast or if the track eats tires. Lightweight bikes are a little cheaper but still 400 or so.

Been there , MX is cheap as hell compared to road racing

I’m not really sensitive to rear tires but front I am. I feel like the 34 is significantly better than 33 so I think I will try spec front tire with standard 34 rear.

I really don’t care either way, it was merely a joke. I remember when the Dunlop 3s came out and everyone was gushing over something closer to a “spec” tire, then everyone bitched and moaned when they didn’t last as long as an intermediate tire. I just hope that doesn’t happen with this rendition.

Something tells me the nature of a spec tire is that it doesn’t last as long. They are intended for peak performance not longevity.

Same. I could see spec fronts outselling 2 to 1.

I’ve ran a few sets of Hoosiers on my 125, I’m a lifetime short track racing fan so I just had to give them a try. They’re pricey and don’t wear very well at all, but the weight difference was absolutely noticeable, especially on a small bore. A few other friends who ran them echoed the same thoughts, but went back to whatever tire they were running originally because the cost to wear ratio was just asinine for average weekend riding. If I was racing seriously, I would definitely go back to running them.

Even when Hoosiers look beat they still work great. Check out bike build thread 24 yz125 vet a rider .  He has picks of a real beat lookin tire   , it still worked great.

I just ran the at 82 rear for the first time, as a mx14 lover I went in the “scoop” direction. I ran it back to back with my mx14 wheel at a track in NorCal called estreet, it’s a “sand” track but pretty damn hardpack actually. Almost like GH in that it’s sand over a hard base, very tough track for traction and great for evaluating tires. The 82 tire is pretty damn good, imo I like it more than the 33 or the 34. Straight line acceleration feels almost as good as the MX 14 on the back sandy parts of the track but then on the front track where the harder base is, it really performed well compared to the mx14. It basically felt like the perfect combo of the mx14 and mx34. You get the straight line forward momentum the 14 provides and then the better lean angle the 34 provides.

The next day at a harder base track called riverfront I ran it exclusively on my 300 and I have a Mx 34 on my 125. Even on the harder track I liked it more than the mx34, again just propels you forward like the 14 but then keeps you confident on flat hard corners when leaned over.

Damnit. Riding GH tomorrow and put a new 34 on instead of the 82 lol. I’ve only ran the 82 in the hard direction (desert) and it works surprisingly well

You came up with this standing over your crystal ball ?  Funny that slow people know everything about a tire designed for fast people.  Ever change your sag 2-8 mm , change clickers etc.

Why would there be any type of legal issues selling a "spec" tire.

Id like to know what the difference is, I would say its probably the thickness/threads per inch of the carcass itself, just softer rubber isnt rocket science and isn't really good on a front tire to begin with. If they are running a more flexible carcass they will degrade faster than a normal tire and will start to get less supportive and too flexible of a sidewall explaining why they arent ran for long, not as much to do with knob degradation.

I have a buddy who mechanics for MCR team. He says at the races Dunlop reps have to cut up all the pull off spec tires so the public cannot use them. Maybe this is dated info and this is no longer the case, maybe ML can chime in on this and add more light to it.

years ago if you were in the right place at the right time, and had a 4leaf clover in your pocket...  you could get a spec take off at a SX race. not sure how much different spec tires are now but back then holy cow they were incredibly light and flexy.  I think i still have a couple collecting dust in the garage😜

lol. I remember watching a old how to video of KW14s mechanic changing a tire. I think he had a bunch of 8” tire spoons and didn’t even have to try to pull the bead over the rim. I stopped watching because I knew for sure, my tires were nothing like that
