Here's something that is a grief-saver. You know how when you pull a dirty air filter, there's always
that thick layer of dirt on top that likes to fall into the boot? Run a strip of tape across the top of the filter
where it meets the air box. Then just pull the tape before you take out the filter. No layer of dirt to fall
into the boot. Works great!

Had a couple spare KTM pipe mounts laying around (cost- $0.00) and they work perfect. I like them better than the Yamaha pieces as well. Had to make a little bracket for the front mount to work and despite it breaking the cardinal rule of adding complexity by making it now a two-piece unit, I still like it better than the OEM Yamaha piece.

What thickness aluminum did you use for this case saver and what did you use to cut it. I’d like to make one also.

Some scrap I had laying around that just seems like it would be about the right thickness. I'll measure it next time I'm at the I'm at the shop.

I roughed it out with a Sawzall, (very rough!) and finished it with a flapper wheel.

I'm going to use some of these Gates Power Grip clamps in spots that don't get disconnected. They
are like pieces of heavy duty shrink tube that take the place of hose clamps
Sure does clean up the look! I'm also going to try one at the pipe silencer junction.

This is an awesome idea! Where did you first learn about these "clamps"?

Whoa! Y'all check out that Blackdiamond gave an "awesome idea" in my thread! Laughing Laughing Thanks, man!

Anyway, I first read about them here on a Vital thread where someone was asking about good hose clamps and
these were suggested. BTW, I searched all over trying to find them locally and of all places, O'Reilly's could order
them for me and had them there that afternoon. Who knew?!
Here is the Gates page with all the part numbers: https://www.gates.com/us/en/fluid-power/engine-hose/hose-clamps-couplin…

Finished the '95 YZ250! I shouldn't actually say "finished" as there is now a lot of testing and tuning to do but it is all put together and has been fired up. It is SWEEET!!

Much thanks to the crew at NCY Motorsports, Rudy at Pro Prept for guidance, Electro Tech Powder Coating, Spec Bolt for putting together a full set of nickel hardware for the bike, my brother Tim for advice and Mom and Dad for letting me take over part of the garage.

Gotta say that I'm damn proud of all the work I did, from revalving the suspension, to lacing wheels to assembling the motor, and learned some things along the way. The only things I sent out was powder coating the frame and the nitrogen charge on the shock. Oh, and the seat cover. I just SUCK at seat covers!! hahahah

Now I just have to go ride the thing!

I have always found this open space between the head tube and tank to be a very cool
part of the look of this bike. I also love the shape of the swingarm and the fully functional
grab handles molded into the side panels.

It turned out nice and clean, looks just like a Factory Yamaha in many ways.

With the two piece shock and kit forks IT IS like a Factory Yamaha in many ways.

Looks great! I like the frame as well, pretty unique, and the grab handles should of never gone away. Pretty cool that you have a build documented and it motivates me to get one for myself. I really hope you put some hours on that bike and report back on how it compares to a newer 250 two stroke. I recommend an hour meter if you haven't already.

Thanks! Yeah, I have an hour meter mounted on the right side head stay under the tank.
I haven't ridden a modern two stroke- my other bikes are a 2004 KTM 200 and a 2006 CRF450; both of which I love.

How did you mount the hour meter?

Gorilla two-sided tape. The stuff seem seriously gnarly so I thought I'd give
it a try. If it eventually comes off, I'll do something more secure.

Man I would love to have that bike in my garage. Looking back at the pictures brings back some memories. I don’t think the oil filler location was designed with the low pipe in mind I had a hose connected to a funnel and it took a long time to fill. I think this bike had different width rear wheel spacers and that really delayed a tire change the first time. The engine was great stock. Nice low end, really worked well on trails.

Braaaaaap! And learn. Welp, I guess if I knew better, I would have just got a 38mm Airstryker carb from the get go instead of trying to run the old carb it came with. First day out riding and I could NOT get it jetted at all clean. Not even close. I was going WTF but a closer look down the top of the carb with a light and it seemed the orirfice the needle goes in was ever so barely oblonged. Trash-ola!

Wanting to just get things done, I sprung for a brand new 38mm Airstryker from JD Jetting that came with one of his jet kits. It was actually a pretty good deal, about $250.00 total.

Tried pump gas first and it would ping when hot. I have heard these motors had a problem with the squish but I wanted to try pump gas first just to see. Switched to VP-110 and it runs great with no detonation.

I’m ending up pretty much at the base settings but still toying around making small adjustments.
I’m still occasionally getting a midrange stumble. But overall it’s great and I’m super pleased.

I haven't even had a chance to turn clickers and adjust things but I can already tell I'm going to like this bike!
What blows is having just built a bike but only getting the chance to go ride every couple weeks. Whaaaaaaa!

I saw this bike at Pala, today. It looks even sweeter in person. It’s kinda cool to see an old-school 250 with plenty of new tach and tricks.

I absolutely love looking for things like the cylinder spacer at the bottom of the cylinder.

I saw it too. I yelled "cool bike" to him as he drove by. I was riding a white and red 2016 "yzm" 250f.

I'm still chasing an intermittent misfire issue mid-range and up. Pulls very clean down low. Jetting is crispy.
I know that era was known to have goofy spark plug caps but I'm going to borrow another stator and check that.

Aside from that, the bike feels really good! I think I am going to enjoy it!!

So I traced the misfire to a failing stator and now the bike runs AWESOME! The motor feels really healthy. Pulls hard down low through the mid. No big hit and not a revver but a bitchen mid range. Really easy to ride. To be honest, as far as two strokes go, I've been a 125/200 guy for the past 20 years so I couldn't even tell you what a ripping 250 is supposed to feel like but I'm digging the shit out of this thing!

Suspension feels really good, too, which is a relief because I was just completely guessing on the valving but it seems to be right in the ball park (for my 54 year old's pace. Laughing ) I am going to play around with it some, though I like how it feels and I haven't even turned a clicker.

Definitely the strangest thing is the riding position. When I first sit on it, the set/pegs/bar relationship makes me go WTF, but within a couple laps, it feels totally normal. You definitely sit in the bike and not on it.

But right now, I'm totally loving it. It sounds awesome, pulls hard and is shit-ton of fun to ride. If I can get a weekend off next month, I'm going to go race it and will report back.

From what I remember about these bikes is that a must-do mod back then was shock linkage from either Devol or Noleen. To be honest, with how it is now with the stock linkage and later model shock, it feels pretty damn good. Maybe the later model shock masks the incorrect curve of the stock linkage? I dunno . . .

But I've been keeping a watch for the Devol or Noleen pieces (they RARELY come up) and snatched up this Devol set the other day. Yes!!!! Woohoo Woohoo Woohoo Woohoo Dang, this bike keeps getting more and more bitchen!

I seen that linkage on eBay ....nice score...parts for these YZ"s are pretty hard to come by...I finally found a set of works connection frame guards for my 93, I had been looking for months! I enjoy searching for the parts....I"m still looking for a works connection skid plate & Pro Taper or Applied top clamp for my 93.

Yeah, the frame guards and glide plate on my '95 are actually from other years and have been sort of
massaged to fit.
