In the market for a 125 found this for 2.1 but he brought down to 1,800. Says it’s garage kept and well maintained and looks pretty clean to me and ready to ride and he needs money for a house so that’s why he is selling. Good deal or too expensive for such a old bike? Will check at his place. Anything I should know of what I’m getting into?

1800.00 seems like a pretty good price to me based on the pics. V-Force reeds, pipe....

The cylinder has been welded up by the head/powervalve area. The cylinder nuts look like bulk hardware from Lowes. Clutch actuator at the clutch cover arm isn't positioned correctly. I'm not bagging on it but I wouldn't touch it. Looks like it's had a rough life. For $1,800 you can find a clean steel frame YZ125. Just my humble opinion.

Purchased one for my son, we both regret selling it. That's a fair price imo.

I did NOT like the 5-speed on my '03. That's not a deal-breaker, but the 6-speed versions are far better IMHO. Those would be any model from about '97 to '01 or '05 to current.
Depending on your location, $1800 might be a little steep. Then again. 2-strokes are coming back!

I am 100% with DynoDan22. I don’t want to take the wind out of your sails, but you can do better than this one.

Should I say what you said to get him to lower his price or just forget it? I mean I’m just doing regular riding not planning to race it or anything .

Rusted sprocket/rotor bolts and not cleaning the underside/inside of number plates and plastic is enough to keep me away. Price is high also(maybe not in NY?).

Go for an '06 or newer. For a few bucks more, you'll basically have the same bike Yamaha sells brand new today.
Even an '05, because it can be brought to current.

For a 05-06 I got a 250f which I may be interested in for around 2k but the 125s are super over priced

I’d stay away from this one. Top of cilinder looks rough. Decal kit makes it look like a nicer bike then it actually is.

Good eye, Dan. Definitely can do better. Did you ride it?

As it is, I'd offer him $1000 and a box of Corona cigars.

Tough crowd. I don't know much about the us prices, especially by state, but the bike look pretty good externally, like if it has been ridden for about a month or 2 with a b rider (there is not even much wear on the frame and the swingarm looks brand new). I would also be curious to see the radiators and if it has all the oem screws.

To see if you need to run away : look very closely at the fork bottoms (missing a bit of material?), frame bottom (tube = good, flat? = rough), swingarm & linkage impacted bottom (?), straight subframe (or not, including additional welds), and look if the engine cases under the bike have been impacted by rocks : if all those parts are quite impacted, the bike had a rough first owner (but may have been cared since).

A worrying point that impact really the value is obviously the cylinder weld (good eye!!!), so maybe try to know what happened here. And ask everything, how many hours the bike has, and if more than 50 hours, ask very important maintenance questions:

- what size the piston is exactly and when it has been changed. If no answer, check the compression. Bear in mind that the main value of a 2nd hand 2 stroke is the size of the cylinder (how long before a nickasil), the cylinder state (does it need a nickasil), and the piston/crank hours)
- when was the rod changed the last time (and so when the crank bearings has been changed)
- swingarms/linkage bearings
- vforce carbon reeds
- fork seals
- possibly gearbox bearings

Lastly, take any metal too and play music on each spoke (turn the wheel while the tool hit each spoke, they must sound the same) and try tightening each spoke. If it is gripped or if some spoke cant be tighten anymore due to rounded head, i would run or use it to negotiate a bit.

That will help you to sum up what you need to change soon or not, on top of 2 new tires Smile

Depends on how "bad" you want a bike. Latter in the season I think you could find a much better bike than this for $1800. It's 16 years old, this is pretty much top dollar for a bike that old. I don't think it's in top dollar condition, but that's on you to decide. I really wonder what is up with the cylinder welding, never seen that. I wouldn't pay more than $1000-1200 for that bike, but market may be different where you are at. As soon as you buy one you are going to find 2-3 '06s for this price range, that's how it always works for me...

Nope he is 1 hour 30 away so 3 hours of driving so I can’t go check it out first unless I’m ready to buy which I’m not

Alright thanks guys I’ll pass on this one unless he significantly lowers the price of it then I can think of it again but otherwise no. I’ll search for some 2005-2006 yz125 or a yz250f and post some pics of them for you guys to see if it’s good or not. Thanks for the tips everyone! Really saved me $1,800!

I've never seen a cylinder welded like that before . . . what would be a reason to do so?
How would it crack like that, or is there another reason?

The cylinder looks strange, needs to know the story. But the bike is not bad for its price, and I would not touch a 250f in this budget.

The seller doesnt know why the guy before him did whatever. The seller is saying it starts up 1-2 kicks and never had to do major maintenance and gave him no issues

I miss my 03! Regret selling it every day. I bought mine back in 2010 for $1000. Can't believe what people are selling them for now.

The cylinder weld may be strange but do you guys think it’ll cause major problems in the long run? Or it is nothing major? I’d go test ride it but I wouldn’t wanna spend 3 hours to go to test ride

Personally, whenever I see stuff like the goofy carb vent tube routing, monster hose clamps on the fuel
line, stator wire not zip tied properly to the frame - my first thought is "idiot owner" which is a red flag.

I wouldn’t pay anything more than 1300. It looks like a good base depending on if the linkage/swing arm/steering stem bearings are good. And when someone says they’ve never had to do any “major maintenance” ide say I probable needs at the very least a piston and a clutch, and it says the guys probable doesn’t know how to maintain it.

That bike has had a rough life unfortunately. The welded cylinder and the cylinder nuts/washers make me wonder what else happened to this bike. You can find a clean well cared for YZ125 well within your budget, it just takes patience.

Looks like the cylinder was welded with the head in place. It isnt easy to steip anodizing, and thats a big blank spot above the weld
6/3/2019 10:38am
Definitely pass! It's too far to go to then find out it's all thrashed out. Way too many red flags.

However, I've rethought my initial offer. $500 and a box of Coronas with Dominican wrappers.
