Vital MX Forum QNA: Blake Baggett

Blake, in your opinion, what's the best unconventional skill or thing to practice for younger racers or people looking to get faster?
Being able to feel and predict the amount of traction the surface is providing. That’s definitely something you have to focus on.

Hey Blake, thanks for doing this always cool to be able to pick someone of your caliber's brain a bit.

I'm not sure how much you care you to comment on this but in that MX Nation series Aldon Baker mentioned that when you and him parted ways that the top rider at the time had the option to buy out another rider within Aldon's program. He basically said that Villopoto bought out your spot in his program, so I was just wondering if you could expand on that and maybe get your thoughts on it?

Thanks.
The sport is just like the real world... there’s a food chain and a pecking order, and I’m okay with it✊?

We all have professional cards & we all represent a professional organization. I think there’s some things they could work on for sure, but just like every organization it’s not perfect.

Hey Blake. I remember watching you and Bruce Rutherford battling in 250B out at Perris during a CMC Golden State series. You guys were haulin until you both tangled and went down pretty hard. I also remember watching you and guys like Travis Baker, our local hero Tyler Sjoberg and a few others out at Glen Helen for Golden State. I was lucky enough to watch all of you guys come through the ranks.

Now for the question. Who is/was the most fierce competitor you've raced with in all of your years of racing? And do you ever get out and do any trail or free riding just to switch things up?
Probably Tomac. I actuallt don’t own a motorcycle at the time! It’s been a long time since I went out trail riding. Right now I spend my extra time in my D9 ??

Blake,

Thanks for doing this. Back in your 250 days, how much of an impact did Pourcel's riding style have on your racecraft? I remember hearing that you used to study him and try to implement some of his "craftiness" into your attack. Look forward to seeing the #4 up front this year.
Yeah back in the day I used to watch him. I would try and pick up on some of his lines. He saves a lot of his energy and that’s important during long motos.

Hi Blake. We all saw Herlings do so well at the final round with a noticeably different style, lower RPMs, maybe a gear higher in places. Did seeing his style and how effective it was make you take another look at your own style? Not in a "your style isn't right" kind of way, but just sort of trying it out at the practice track.
Not really. I’m a completely different rider and we all have our styles that we’ve created.

Doesn't the ronnie mac BS, selfies, twitter, and all the Feld circus fireworks etc take away from the sport?
It might a little bit... but there’s always a class clown and Ronnie Mac keeps all of us riders entertained. I think the sport just needs more character sometimes. So it might hurt it in some ways, but might help our following also.

Hey Blake good luck this season. I'm on the Blake wagon and hope your poops in a group man.
Now for my question.
What kind of track changes would you like to see in supercross.? Personally I would like to see you guys race some late 90s retro style courses. A little slower with some strange rhythm maybe?. Maybe some dubs in corners? It would be great for tv if nothing else.

Blake,

Do you have a favorite brand of bike you've ridden so far or are they all quite good at your level? I'd think if there were any traits with a bike that were a bit undesirable, that they'd be able to fix most of them at the factory level. Is this the case or do you ever have race bikes you have to compete that you really don't like?

Hey Blake! I was Just wondering what sort of workout regiment you use to stay fit. Are there any specific workout you use that one could try in the gym? Also Another question is when do you find its best to sit an lift your leg in a turn? Thanks Blake, Keep Killing it Bud!
I do a lot of different things. I just do whatever works for me personally. I don’t over do it.

Hey Blake thanks for taking the time for the questions. I loved the video you made with Weege about all the construction and track building you are doing at El Chupacabra ranch. It looked like you already built in some elevation changes and moved tons of dirt. Do you have any plans to go even bigger with the elevation changes in the future? If so how high are you going for
(Mt. Chupacabra?) and are you able to just move dirt around your property for the tracks or do you have to buy dirt and haul it in?
Good luck on the upcoming season!
Yeah when we get time to do phase two we’re going to move a lot more dirt. It’s a busy lifestyle, we have a lot to fous on at the ranch along with riding and training, but it’s fun

Blake, thanks for giving us some time here. My question is, whoever thought it was a good idea to velcro your hand to the grip of a factory 450 and actually try to race that way? I mean, who does that?? I'm just speculating but you must have nads the size of watermelons to have thought, hey, this might work! Best of luck with your recovery and kick ass in 2018.
I honestly don’t rememver who’s idea it was. We all came together in the shop one day and decided we were going to do whatever it took. So my mechanic nate handled creating the Velcro handle bar piece and my wife sewed all of my gloves. It’s a team effort

Hey Blake, been a fan since you turned pro, was good to see you finally get that fire back after a few rough years,
First question: How's the thumb recovery going, will you be 100% by A1?
Second question: You've in the past been a better MX rider than a SX rider although had some good rides this year, have you made moves to better your craft indoors for this upcoming year? would be awsome to see you mix it up indoors as well as out this year!
Your come from behind rides have had me on the edge of my seat this year! Keep it pinned!
I actually don’t think I’ll know the answer to either of those questions until I get on the gate at A1. Every year I work my hardest, and put in my best effort. The team and I get the bike as comfortable as possible and we go for it.

Hey Blake. I remember back a couple years ago you had went down to the stewarts place and was riding there alot during the outdoor season. How was it to ride there and also what was is like to have James as a teammate? Was he instrumental in helping you get the suzuki ride? And lastly... are yall still friends to this day?
The Stewart facility is awesome & so is their family. We both rode on different schedules because I wasn’t in Florida full time, but I did learn a lot from him.

Hey Blake,

Awesome to see you check in here. Couple of quick fire questions if I may...

- Who or what was your biggest inspiration growing up?
- If you were stuck in an elevator for a couple of hours who, is the last person in the world you'd want to be trapped in there with?
- most embarrassing fan moment? (for you or them)
- You can have a choice of one song to listen to before a race - what would you choose?

Cheers dude! Rooting you on from across the pond for 2018 Smile
My biggest inspiration growing up was Jeremy McGrath. My most embarrassing moment - looping out in San Diego last year on the start.
I don’t listen to any music before I ride, but if I had to, probably something country ??

I would like to see the movie figure out how to separate the riders more. Right now the tracks are so tight, you’re only chance of winning really is a top 3 start. I’d like for them to give us a little more room to battle for positions.

The KTM has been my best fit so far.
It’s light & works perfect for someone my size.

Hey Blake - awesome of you to do this. I cant wait to see you race in 18. I will cheering for for the #4.

I have two questions:

How are you feeling about SX - I have a feeling you are going to turn some heads with some great rides??

When the hell are more videos coming out of your compound and track?? Those are fun to watch.

Everyone likes a comeback story, Will you (el Chupacabra) be more consistently on the top step of the podium in the 2018 season? We have seen flashes of speed and determination to only be hindered by an injured thumb. So we ask, Will the thumb be healed and will you have enough time to properly train before A1 or will the season start out rocky?

Hey Blake...

Keep keeping it real. (But not TOO real.)

Also, Cold Stone is where it's at.
