Which motocross helmet to buy?

Edited Date/Time 3/7/2019 5:46am
Hi all,

I have recently had a really bad crash causing a massive crack down the centre of my Bell SX-1 (rather my helmet than my head) and am now in the market for a new helmet. Ive heard Airoh and Bell are the best but not sure what model or make to get. My budget is around £250-£300 max.

Any help would be appreciated

If you can find a place to try them on that is your best bet, we have a local store that has hundreds of helmets. I was surprised how different the fit was between models let alone brands.

Look for a deal on the fly f2. Probably the best bang for your buck in that price range. I was able to get my showtime moto9 flex for $360 on closeout at RM. try to look at that route too.

I've had great luck with Bell, Arai, 6D and I like my AGV a lot too. I've read good things about Troy Lee and Fly.

I don't think you can get a bad helmet if you pay attention and do the research your head deserves.

If that helmet saved your head in a really bad crash, then I would buy the same damn thing again!

Don’t cheap out! Most important piece of equipment you should invest in right along with knee braces.

My Troy Lee helmet is so comfortable that I'm literally wearing it right now

Please save up and buy a 6D.
Your head is worth it.

I'll be looking for a new lid soon too. When I do I'm starting by finding a pair goggles I like, then trying on helmets with the goggles on. Don't know if you saw the thread about helmet opening size and goggles smooshing your nostrils shut. I won't make that mistake again. Good luck

If you don’t have a 6D you are wearing the wrong helmet.

any of them. they're all based off a Shoei shell from 20 years ago. no one (even Bell) has shaped a truly NEW helmet in 2 decades.

I closely examined a new 6D ATR-2 helmet at my local motocross shop that was cut open by 6D to reveal the design of the helmet. I've gotta say that cross-sectioned helmet seemed revolutionary to me and made perfect sense. After seeing that I could never buy a conventionally designed helmet again. Ridiculously expensive but I ride a lot and I am nervous about that one big hit.

I just received my 6d in the mail. The fit is good and will improve after break-in. My one worry is that the mouth guard is too close to my mouth. I hope I can still use my camelpak comfortably.
I’m coming off a shoei that is only about 3-4 years old and I will still use occasionally. I really like the shoei and time will tell if I like the 6d.

6D is a great choice. Awesome technology. The new Fly helmet looks very interesting as well.

So when are you planning on lining up against Jeffro? He's still waiting for an answer.

Put your money where your mouth is, contact him and schedule something.

Oh, and don't forget the GoPro.

You can get into a Moto 9 Flex for that price. Great lid. I have a few of them myself.

Only thing you're waxing is your legs there Richard. You need to change your quote to "Don't Ride & Slap My Own Ass".

Jeffro knows what series and class I race. It’s up to him to show up. I am happy to run my GoPro.

I did the same. Only wore my Shoei a handfull of times since. A helmet is one piece of gear you shouldn’t cheap out on. Congrats on the new lid!

I see you're from GBR, you can get a leftover Bell Moto 9 Flex for that price. I don't think you'll find a better helmet than that in that price category. And i think it is a better option than the first 6D helmet that in my opinion has some basic flaws with it (too heavy, big, didn't fit me well, low quality interior considering the price). You might be able to find a 6D ATR-1 for the same price as a Bell Flex helmet but i would buy the newest 6D ATR-2 if i would buy a 6D again.

I don't actually. I have no idea what class you ride , or age group , and have no idea who you are. Even asked multiple times , with no response. When you originally mentioned " The 7 series " I had no idea what it was. I had heard of " The classic series ".

What about the OTMX round? I'll be racing 50 Expert. Will you be in my class? And if you are , how would I even know? How would anyone know?

I like the technology in the LS2 Subverter. My son lawn darted in two different gnarly high sides. Neither gave him a concussion. Ventilation is great and plenty of goggle room.
Chisholm lawn darted on one of the SX starts earlier this year prett bad... no concussion for him either. The technology is really fantastic. The cost isn’t astronomical because they manufacture them in house... as the matter of fact, they manufacture a good many of the brands out there. So, it’s a solid product for a reasonable price.
