Tires for everything - soft/intermediate or intermediate/hard?

Time to spring for some new tires.  I ride motocross and race offroad.  The tracks I ride when weekend prepped are soft/loamy, and midweek dried out a combo of sandy/silty and hard packed baked clay.  The offroad races span the spectrum from powdery beach sand to blue groove/baked clay.

Have gone through a set of Dunlop MX3S (pretty good) and a set of Dunlop MX34 (good in soft, bad on hardpack).

Would really like some tires that give some more confidence in the hard packed stuff even at the expense of some soft terrain performance.  I read that the Dunlop AT82 or Dunlop MX53 may be better suited for what I'm looking for.  The AT82 looks just like the 3S but supposedly wears better.  The 53 looks like a more hardpack tire but I have no experience with it.

Bike is Husqvarna FC350 with riding in central Texas and Houston area.

Any thoughts?

I personally am not a fan of the AT82’s, especially rear. I find the rubber compound to be less pliable, kinda feels more like plastic compared to a MX34. I said this to my buddy that trains the KTM/Husky off-road team (practices on a factory bike), he agreed and said he hates those tires, front and rear. I know some factory racers were running the AT82 at times during the season, but they were not the same compound you and I can get.

I personally feel you gotta bite the bullet and run 34 if you want optimal traction. I have heard of people running the Tusk rear tires and not minding them, maybe run one of those in the rear and a MX34 front.

Not the same scoop you and I can buy though.

Maxxis MaxxCross SI. Ran it for years at GNCC. It'll grab in everything from mud to rocky hardpack. Doesn't lose all its traction once you break the corners on the knobs either. Lastly, it's got pretty good wear life even on hardpack

True deep stuff you need an mx33/3s/82 front. Those work well in intermediate too. Hard pack it is hard to beat an x31 front especially if it is slick. Don’t bother with the 53 front. I would like to try a 34 factory front to see if it fixes the poor hard pack grip of the standard 34 front.

Rears I like the Pirelli scoop or mx14 for bottomless sand. For intermediate to hard the 81 rear is pretty good but they stopped making it. The 34 is okay until the edges round off. The 53 rear is okay too. I would like to try the x31 rear in those conditions but I am burning off my last at81 first. I am not as picky about rear tires as front.

Bridgestone m59 front 24/7. Rear varies with terrain.

I too am looking at different tires. Tried Dunlop MX34s, Pirelli MX32 mid-soft, and want to try Bridgestone X31s and the new Pirelli MX32 mid soft rear. The new Pirelli might be what you are looking for.

I like the Bridgestone x20 front and rear for pretty much all conditions. It doesn't quite have the grip on the softer stuff that the pirelli mx32 has but it holds on better once the track gets baked out and blue groove. The rear also lasts quite well even on a 450.

The tracks I race on start muddy in the morning and end up dusty blue groove by the end of the day

Just looked up that new MX32, looks like a knobbie and scoop had a baby, interesting for sure.

I race/practice XC, and just practice moto. As of right now I like the 82 front and the 34 or x31 rear for everything. The 82 rear is ok in straight line traction, but on a hard pack corner exit leaned over that tire is sketchy AF. IMO the side knobs on that tire are to far spaced out for hard pack. This is on a 350, I couldn't imagine how bad it would be on a 450.

Dunlop recently opted out of my dealer program through Rocky Mountain, and i refuse to pay $150 for a rear tire. So this past weekend I through a set of the new michelin starcross 6's on my kids bike and sent him out for 6 motos at KROC. He top 5'd both classes, we will stick with the Michelins for now.

Lately I have been liking the IRC VX40 rear and VX30 front.

Best front I've tried in a while and the rear is a great mix of traction in soft stuff and is great on the sun baked clay stuff.

It's really hard to beat the Michelins for a do it all tire.  I run the Starcross 6 medium/soft in rocks, mud, hard pack, loam.. you name it.  It's pretty damn good in everything and predictable.  They last a long time too and work great even when you lose the edge.  I just tossed on the new Enduro 2 on the front as I really loved the original version and have heard good things about it.  Seems a like a softer rubber compound than the Starcross and I'm heading to South Dakota for an off road event next week and wanted to see how it worked there.

I’ve been using Michelin for about a year after I decided that I just couldn’t get on with the Dunlop MX34s, they need higher tire pressures to prevent roll and for me that created a harsh feel that I didn’t like, especially on hardpack. I started with the  Starcross 6 medium, but found it was too much of a compromise on performance during the first half of a race day when everything is muddy. I went to the mid-soft front and rear and am happy with them - they wear well and perform well throughout the day. I will say after they get a few hours on them they are more skiddish on hardpack when it comes to acceleration when leaned, but I think it’s predictable enough. I plan to stick with them - I also ride a 350.

Just last week I tried the AT82 front in 90/100 on my 450 and liked it a lot. Ate up square edge pretty well and felt very connected running 14 psi. stuck with a 34 on the rear.

Update: I read a bunch of reviews today of Dunlop MX34, Michelin Starcross 6, Bridgestone X31, and those mentioned.

I see that many of the things I’ve complained about on the MX34 are probably teared to wear and age, especially on the rear.  Just looking now my tires probably have 40 hours so they’ve done well.

I went with the Bridgestone X31 front and rear.  I’ll update after race this coming Sunday. It’s at a course I’ve raced before with powdery beach sand, rocks, and hard pack - literally everything.

40 hours is a long time on a tire.

Good choice with those X31’s: Curious/excited to hear your ride report. With a $50 rebate through November on a pair of them (RMATVMC at least), good pricing for true Made in Japan sneakers as well

I was shocked to see my notes since the front looks pretty decent and the rear is finally rounded well. The MX34 wasn’t as bad as I thought.

I rode 3 times on a concrete hard pack with mid to hard Pirrelli. Tires looked new yet.  Only twice on a deep sand with clay section with mid soft Pirrelli. Tires looked new yet. It should’ve been 5 times , rained out , garage lock broke. Raced sat, sun deep wet sand with the same tires.  A sand tire would’ve been better . But still got 12th against 25 mod 125,s at a big race. There on the gate & I,m doing 3 laps practice. Get to the gate last , no prep, or holeshot device & started in 1st.  I spun a lot getting to 4th gear or would’ve been top 8.

No shit, I sometimes wonder if you’re part of a training program for CIA agents and techniques of online manipulation. Or perhaps testing the limit of LLM engagement in specific domains.

In any case, I too am a fan of 3rd gen Honda CRs.

I,m beyond exhausted truck is Super Dangerous & much more physical than jackhammering. 800+ mi of backroads to eL Paso, trying to get a gd shower for 9 days. If I park at a ts there’s 14-24 waiting alright. Went through w Tx. Oil field today Real bad expience there nov18 to March 19. Totally dead now. I just went in again & there’s more waiting to shower.  Anyway I bought a used scoop my side knobs of my Pirrelli where higher. The deep wet sand track has a shit ton of corners . So I kept the mid soft Pirrelli on. I only rode  sand twice in the last 24 yrs . I figured a scoop wouldn’t make a difference anyway. If i was on the gate at the same time as the 12+ yr olds with gate prep & holeshot device. A  top 3-8 start of 25 is reality .  Thst DBP 04 cr125 is Nasty threw the mid

I think even if you buy the cheapest tire in the world you'll be in heaven if your current tires have 40 hours haha! I usually get 10-12 max, but I'm also on a lot of hardpack.

The Europeans were buying stacks of the new MX32 this last weekend.  So crazy how Dunlop has the market so locked down here and across the pond, they won't touch one.

Each side of the pond definitely has its bias for tires. I’m trying to be objective and ride a decent variety so I know which I prefer.

I’ve been using X31s for quite a while now with no complaints.  Great, predictable traction on a variety of surfaces, and they wear like iron.

I ran the MX34 and MX53 back to back on hard pack and blue groove and the MX34 hooked up a little better.

I use the MS3 front on hard pack but have also used the Scorpion mid soft front and I like that tire as well.

I was a diehard Bridgestone 403/404 guy for years and years, and the X30/X31 never quite did it for me, I've been running mostly Washougal IIs lately and have been having really good luck.
