The leaders of two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine have asked Vladimir Putin for help in repelling "aggression" from the Ukrainian army, the Interfax news agency has quoted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying.

This is potentially of huge significance, given that many observers have suggested unfounded claims of Ukrainian military aggression to separatist forces would likely form the pretext to an invasion.

kongols, it's hard to keep track of the things that Putin says because he seems to contradict himself so often, but he has expressed at least a few times thoughts that suggest he thinks that all the former Soviet republics should be under his/Russia's control. Does that alarm most Latvians?

It will be interesting if this approach continues to play out and he announces that Russia has a territorial right to what was once East Germany..........

Kongols, I know you have a life outside of Vital, but I as well appreciate your perspective on these events. Have you thought about the potential of the conflict to expand beyond Ukraine?

Putin just sealed his fate. He's going to be toast. He can take Ukraine but he won't be able to hold it. Tyrants always lose in the end.

President Vladimir Putin called on Ukrainian soldiers to put down their arms. He said that those who try to interfere with Russia’s actions “must know that Russia’s answer will be immediate, and will lead to such consequences as you never experienced in your history.”

Sounds like a rational human being.

I`m too old to run. If anything, I`ll join military. My kids are too young to fight, so it has to be me. I hope it won`t get to that point.

Your point about pre-1997 is moot cause it's already in NATO...too late Mr Putin. Furthermore, the state of Russia's military in the 90s is not what...
Your point about pre-1997 is moot cause it's already in NATO...too late Mr Putin. Furthermore, the state of Russia's military in the 90s is not what it has been for the past 10 years.

I merely stated the current Russian position, which has not changed since Georgia tried the same move back in 2008 (again a combo of fault between false promises from the West and a foolish Georgian president).

Drawing parallels with pre-WW2 can just as easily be done the other way (not that I agree with either). Russia fought a fascist Germany in Ukraine where millions died. Since far-right (real nazis) elements were involved in the Maidan coup, it's not a far stretch to say Ukraine is controlled by Nazis. This is what locals that remember the war believe in Eastern Ukraine. Whether you agree with it or not is irrelevant.

Did I say I was OK with Russia dictating what Ukraine can or cannot do?

I am pragmatic. Ukraine has enormous strategic importance to Russia, therefore joining NATO is perceived as a direct threat to Putin's rule. The West must consider this very carefully cause there will be enormous repercussions if they move ahead with NATO membership. Ukraine would at the very least be flattened...even if article 5 was not honored. If it is honored...then game over for everyone. Hence, I don't think the US has the stomach for this....

Taiwan however....is a very different topic....that one scares me far more than the Ukraine crisis...
Nobody is going to defend Taiwan either.

There will be cyber, information, and small attacks from sympathizers and separatists.

Then, the Baltics are at risk from exactly what Putin is doing in Ukraine.

Ground fighting will begin soon. By the time the US wakes up there will be hundreds or thousands of casualties. Putin has shown his hand, Its our responsibility to cut it off.

Taiwan is the largest chip maker and is on Chinas radar. Only a matter of time....

Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are countries that we can do without.

As sad and selfish as it may sound, fate of Baltics lay in a hands of Ukrainians. If Putin is succesful there and and it goes smooth for him there- Baltics is fucked.

I just went through russian media. There is not a word about Russia attacking Ukraine. It`s solely about Donbas, that Ukraine provoked Russian attack in Donbas. He keeps his people in a dark.

Let's all send positive energy to kongols, the Ukranian people and military, as well as our own U.S. troops on standby right outside of Ukraine...God forbid they actually have to go into battle...that will officially be the threshold of literally, WWIII..we all need to remember that we, the U.S. do NOT want to go to war with Russia because this isn't 1942 where tanks and infantry battled it out...this is an era of nuclear weapons being just a push of a button away.... This is going to get so ugly. FUCK PUTIN. This is ALL on him, no one else. Full stop.

On a more positive note: it’s good to see how strong and united NATO and EU have been in this. Still weary of Turkey, which proves why we shouldn’t accept just any country to the organisations.
Putin does not touch NATO, his military is far too small to mess with Europe and NATO. He knows that is a death sentence. He goes after former Soviet republics which are weak and on their own: ukraine, Kazakhstan etc. many of which are his friends already.
The new sanctions basically freeze Russian assets and segregate them financially. Russia is heading down a dark rabbit hole
