As riders and fans of this sport. We're sick of seeing the top riders on the sketchiest tracks ever made. Bring back the lime so the tracks can hold up better. Its beyond ridiculous now. 5 years of playdough dirt. Use lime in covered stadiums at the very least. Whoops are non existent now, and these guys shouldn't be riding supercross tracks that are rutted more than Outdoor tracks.
Lime has increased 5x in price since Covid.
Ticket prices are almost at that level of increase too.
Very intriguing topic. The tracks have been getting softer and ruttier for sure. Would be curious to know if there are "healthier" alternatives to lime out there. Deep ruts through whoops should not be a thing in covered stadiums.
I was thinking the same thing. There has to be a non hazardous chemical they can use that does a similar thing. Only thing I've just found is a chemical called Thioguard, its safer and non- hazardous. No idea on the price. But its at least an option.
The Shop
Yeah no, let's leave the acidic chemicals out of the dirt, the riders bodies and the bikes. let the tracks develop as they may. As they say variety is the spice of life..
Yes, let's ruin hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment for the sake of no ruts..
You do realize they used Lime a lot before the "incident" and nobody's bikes got ruined?
Yeah not a good idea. I think at the 2019 San Diego Supercross there were a bunch of riders that got skin rashes and damaged their bikes from lime in the dirt. I’ll take the ruts
Bring back Ms. Supercross
I like the idea for covered stadiums only. You won’t have to worry about a mudder that splashes a lime/water mixture up on the riders and all over the bikes like what happened in San Diego. Would be nice to see some hard(ish) pack tracks again to change things up a little.
Brown astroturf
There's a difference in sprinkling it over soft /damp dirt to firm it up and putting it on a track that was 2" under water like they did then lol. I don't understand why they did that, nothing is gonna work then. I see no reason why they shouldn't use it again m
Anything so we can get back decent tracks. Start cross, rutts cross need to go.
Rider should race each other, not the track.
I’m not saying I agree with it but that will be their excuse.
At this point I'm just dreaming of a track with no ruts for the novelty factor ha. What I would give to watch a race with dry loose dirt in the bowl berms to watch guys just cutting in and out and backing their bikes into corners and blasting out.
I think they should ask the racers that are there racing about stuff like the lyme.
The incident with the Lime that caused them to stop using it was an isolated event. They had been using it for years before. I believe the issue that race was some mismarked bags. So they got the wrong type of lyme, and also it was not mixed into the dirt as well before the rain came. So the water was able to mix with it and cause the issues.
They could go back to using it and not have issues. I don't know how easy it is to make the mistakes they made. But on most tracks it would be safe. And help with the ruts.
I say do whatever will provide the best combination of giving the racers a track they feel like they can ride safely, that offers the best racing, that data can support is safer as far as preventing injuries, and gives Dirtworx the most time to get in and groom as needed between races. In my opinion, giving racers consistent tracks will provide the best racing. So they know what the track will be like everytime they go out racing AFTER practice. Build the tracks differently so they are not all the same layout or type of dirt. You can not give every racer , everything they want though. Because they will want stuff that works to their advantage. So more on the data side and maybe talk with past racers too that do not have anything to gain.
Supercross has had a history of smooth groomed tracks. Outdoor tracks , leave them rougher. But SX tracks that make the best guys look like slow guys like me, is not a good show.
Finally somebody said it! I agree, tracks were better and seemed safer when we added the lime. They still were rutted by the end of the night but this is ridiculous. I know a few years back there was an incident with riders getting a rash but I believe that was from overuse because of the expected rain. Once the rain deluge happened, all of the extra lime soaked the riders and caused rashes. I believe Roczen got the worst of it...
Between damaged bikes and, riders sustaining burns, that’s a bad idea.

Pit Row
I remember lime being put on the muddy track that ruined a lot of bikes and caused harm to the rider.
Was lime used back when tracks were harder packed?
The amount of children in here not understanding how much of an isolated incident San Deigo '19 was. WOW. Something needs to be done. These tracks are so beat that no one can ride thru a set of whoops without looking like C riders.. The real people know it looks terrible when the best on the planet can't navigate what should be a routine section because the track is built with playdough.
Hmmmm, so many talk about damaged bikes... lime was used for years before the "incident of 19". No mechanix or teams that I am aware of complained about bike damage....
Lime and spec tires.
So we want no ruts.. No sections that allow creativity that a rider could gain an advantage on. No sections that riders can send a section for a risk vs reward opportunity. We don't want dragons backs and we want to cap to 9 whoops that are smaller and more achievable.
Daytona track with the split rhythm section was one of the best track sections we have seen in ages.. I don't understand why creating obstacles that cause separation is a bad thing?
Show me his lime burns from any of all the previous SX races he's completed in?
If the track builder works lime or other stuff into the dirt correctly, there’s no problem. It was a one off event where they dumped lime onto the surface and left it that was a problem. Jeez, I always thought dirt bike people were comfortable with a little risk, using some lime, properly, for soil conditioning is really low risk.
My vote is for:
1. Bring back real whoops, the one feature that made SX what it used to be
2. Bring back Dragon's backs
3. Bring back lime
4. Don't flatten the track or change the track design to make it easier if rain is in the forecast, leave it alone
5. Ban starting devices
Show me a little sense of humor.
That was posted with sarcasm.
Sports evolve over time. Look at the pitch clock in MLB, one of the oldest organized, professional sports in history. Sometimes better and sometimes worse. I'm old, so nostalgia is strong, but the tracks of the late MC era, early Carmichael were some of the best. I remember Ezra Lusk throwing down a huge quad at an Anaheim race when I was a young racer. Not a rhythm quad, but a triple with an extra landing... a true "Quad". I don't think going "big" is the answer by any means, but the track designers had the opportunity to make things interesting. Isn't racing a dirt bike, going as fast as possible over the terrain, the idea at its core? GNCC, Motocross, Desert, Supercross... Point A to Point B, sometimes multiple times, is racing.
Racing on predictable tracks, that break down, is part of the evolution. Do I like watching the best riders in the world "jump" through whoops sections? Not really.... Nor do I really acre for super predictable finish line jump and "standard" triple. These riders can triple these somewhat random rhythm sections, I think they can manage a different style of finish jump.
There is no real way to make everyone happy, such is life. Do I encourage the mixing something in the dirt? Sure, if its safe. What other solutions are there? I grew up practicing at Lake Elsinore. I'm not a scientist and have no idea what was in that dirt, but that was some hard, slick stuff. It was too slick and dry, but mixing in an event that offers that kind of surface would be interesting. I want to see some hard pack whoops. I want to see the best riders in the world blitzing them late into the main event to show who is the fastest. I don't need it at every track, but I think we can all agree watching riders jumping whoops is pretty played out at this point.
Looked like the same argument some are making against it, only more articulate.
After re-reading it, I realized it’s tough to tell which direction that was going just reading words on a screen.
I could honestly care less about the lime or, even the mud. It was kinda cool seeing McElrath pull off a surprise win in the mud.
