Ca. plated 2003 WR450. Suspension lowered 2", seat concepts "comfort" seat. Pro prept exhaust. Has electric start but hasn't worked for awhile. Never fixed it because it generally starts first or 2nd kick once you get to know it lol. Was my first dual sport, now my kids but he's looking to upgrade. I know it's not worth beans besides being Ca plated. Think it's worth ? $2,500' ? $3,500' ? $1,500 ? Put it out with the trash ? Registration paid through 25, legit paperwork etc. It starts easy and runs good, but it is a 21 year old motorcycle...
Pros - Ca legal dual sport
Cons - found out 03' was the first year electric start and it's a "1 year only" motor. So some parts could be tricky to find. He's on the fence between selling it while the gettings good or riding it into the dirt 😃
I vote for riding it into the ground as a spare/buddy bike. Selling bikes has become such a hassle the last few years, and the current state we’re in is the worst I’ve seen the used bike market in a long time. For the $ that bike would realistically bring, the hassle just doesn’t seem worth it to me.
Anything that runs and has new plastic will sell for atleast $2k, likely more since it's plated.
Put it on facebook for $3k and see if there's any interest.
Might not be a great racing dirtbike but people love the DRZ400's on the road and this would be more fun than those.
Because of the CA plate you might get $3k+
I’ve got a really nice 06 KTM RFS for sale, 450xc, I bought it new, several magazines called it the off-road bike of the year in 06-07. Very well set up. Not a single call at 3500.
He'll either keep riding it or sell it and get a newer one. We've done the give a buddy a bike to ride gig before, something usually gets hurt, the bike, the rider, your bank account, or all of the above. We're out of the free bike rental business. 😆
The Shop
This era of bike is not desirable at all for the average consumer. Heavy, carbureted, four stroke.
Not one call at $3'500' ? Ouch... I hate selling bikes so I usually price them low and take the loss, that seems reasonable for that bike. I think the problem with selling used bikes in the 3500-4500 range is if a guy has that kind of lump sum cash in his hand, he's usually successful enough to by a new bike. Good luck. The plate is really this ones only redeeming quality. Otherwise it'd just be an old dirt bike, and a semi funky model to begin with, and it's also been lowered and "Old manned" with a fat comfortable seat. An older mechanically inclined buyer that wants a cheap street legal dirt bike to cruise around on would be ideal, but find that guy lol.
I haven't dealt with this yet but I have a friend who said the Ca dmv isn't buying the "Stated sales price" anymore, they know that we're all full of shit and NEVER put down the price that was actually paid on the bill of sale for used vehicles. So they are now going to "Asess" a value to the bike and you'll have to pay the taxes on that amount. They actually want to see the bike in person. I told him to take it all apart and put it in boxes since he's going to take it apart anyway. He's buying an old DT360 to restore and said they weren't buying that he bought it 300 bucks. We were talking about dropping some rope down the spark plug hole to make the motor seem seized 😆 Frickin criminals. I haven't talked to him lately so not sure how it went, but that's something they're trying here in commiefornia
That is a very nice, clean used dirt bike.
I think I'd start at 2750.00 and go from there to see what's offered.
Check out the flea market at advrider.com and see what they are asking for them. You can even see most that have sold.
I paid $2500 for a CA street-plated 2003 KDX220 in early 2020 right before the COVID used bike cost explosion.
So very similar bike, but an old KDX is probably more desirable (and more rare with a tag) on the market for cheap trail bikes than an early 450 WR. But, like the buyer of your bike will, I knew I was just purchasing a license plate that happened to have a decent dirt bike attached to it.
Bout tree fiddy
Thanks! I’m probably gonna just keep it around as a spare, it’s just not worth letting it go for the $2k I’d probably get for it. It’s got a Thumper Racing 490 top end, with the right cam and a couple other things, it’s a great motor. Fast and really smooth.
The CA plate on the OPs WR is the best selling point, like others have said: someone will buy the bike just to get the plate. Advertise it for $3300 or so, see what you can get.
